Pillar #2: Building a Life in Rhythm with Nature

What if the secret to sustained energy, emotional balance, and vibrant health wasn't a new supplement or the latest wellness trend — but simply living in greater harmony with nature's rhythms? This week, Emilie explores Vihara, the Ayurvedic pillar of lifestyle and daily practice.

In this video, you’ll learn about Dinacharya (daily routines), Ritucharya (seasonal routines), the Ayurvedic clock and the power of discernment in daily life choices.

The Art of Daily Routine: Dinacharya

In Ayurveda, Vihara encompasses all the lifestyle choices, daily rhythms, and intentional practices that support our wellbeing. Central to this pillar is Dinacharya — a set of daily practices designed to first cleanse and then nourish the body and mind. After a night of rest and natural detoxification, the morning is the ideal time to complete that cleansing process and set a nourishing tone for the day ahead.

These practices might include tongue scraping (which removes residue and supports digestion), warm lemon water with honey to prepare the digestive system, Abhyanga (self-massage with warm oil to nourish the tissues and nervous system), and Nasya (oiling the nasal passages to support immunity and mental clarity). Emilie's most important advice: don't try to implement everything at once. Start with one practice, maintain it for two weeks, and then gently add another.

Seasonal Living: Ritucharya

Nature doesn't stay the same year-round — and neither should we. Ayurveda recognizes that our diet, exercise, social engagement, and self-care practices all need to shift with the seasons to keep our energy, immunity, and mental health in balance. Eating warming, grounding foods in winter and lighter, cooling foods in summer isn't just intuitive; it's profoundly supportive for the body.

The Ayurvedic Clock

Another beautiful tool from Ayurveda is the concept of the Doshic clock — the idea that different qualities of energy dominate different parts of the day. Understanding these rhythms can help you schedule your most demanding tasks, your meals, your movement, and your rest in alignment with when your body is naturally most capable of each.

The Practice of Discernment

Perhaps the most transformative aspect of Vihara is the cultivation of discernment — the honest, compassionate practice of regularly asking: what in my life is truly serving my wellbeing, and what is not? This applies to your schedule, your relationships, your habits, and your environment. Emilie emphasizes that this is not about perfection, but about making conscious, loving choices over time

  • Choose one Dinacharya practice to begin with and stick with it for two weeks before adding another.

  • Adjust what you eat and how much you exercise as the seasons shift — let nature be your guide.

  • Use the Ayurvedic clock to schedule focused work, movement, and rest at the times your body is most supported.

  • Carve out a daily or weekly spiritual practice — whether that's meditation, prayer, journaling, or time in nature — that helps you reconnect with yourself and release what is out of your control.
